The City of Grand Forks launched a major flood protection program to safeguard the downtown core after repeated high-water events. FRPD was engaged to supply and install a new sheet pile floodwall designed to provide long-term protection for homes, businesses and critical infrastructure.

Problem

Downtown Grand Forks required a permanent flood barrier capable of reducing future flood risk while minimizing environmental and community impacts. Construction needed to occur within a constrained corridor bordered by a sensitive riparian habitat on one side and private residences on the other. The solution had to be delivered safely, efficiently and on schedule to ensure timely protection ahead of future high-water seasons.

Solution

FRPD supplied and installed a continuous sheet pile wall system around the downtown area. Crews installed approximately 500 metres of sheet piling, along with steel capping plates, using low-impact methods to manage vibrations and protect adjacent habitat and homes.

Key Facts
  • Installed ~500 m of sheet piling for the new flood protection wall
  • Supplied and installed steel capping plates along the full wall alignment
  • Worked beside sensitive riparian zones and residential properties with strict impact controls
  • Coordinated closely with the City and environmental monitors
  • Completed all work on time, providing critical flood protection before the next high-water season

FRPD successfully delivered the new flood barrier under challenging conditions, helping protect the Grand Forks community from future flooding events.
