SAAM Towage: C-Structure Dock Replacement
SAAM Towage Canada undertook a program to replace aging steel docking barges along the south shore of Burrard Inlet. The upgraded floating dock system was designed to eliminate structural risks, improve operational safety and enhance day-to-day efficiency for tug operations. FRPD was contracted to supply and install the new steel pipe piles required to support the replacement dock structures.
Problem
The existing docking barges were at risk of structural failure and no longer met modern safety or operational requirements. The work required pile replacement in a narrow, active marine corridor, with strict environmental timing windows. The project also demanded specialized drilling and driving systems capable of installing long, large-diameter steel pipe piles in challenging ground conditions.
Solution
FRPD delivered the full pile installation scope, mobilizing a marine drilling system and multiple barges outfitted with falsework, driving equipment and containment systems. Crews installed new drilled piles, removed aging piles and completed all in-water work within the required least-risk window.

Key Facts
- Installed 17 drilled steel pipe piles: six 36″ piles 90–100 ft long and 11 42″ piles 110–160 ft long
- Removed and disposed of 12 existing 36″ steel pipe piles
- Mobilized a complete marine drilling system on the derrick
- Deployed four barges with falsework frames, pile driving systems and spoil containment
- Performed all in-water work within the August 16–February 28 least-risk instream window
- Invested in new drilling equipment and system upgrades to meet performance and schedule needs
FRPD completed the installation safely and on schedule, enabling SAAM Towage to transition to a more resilient, efficient and reliable docking system on Burrard Inlet.
