BC Hydro: W.A.C. Bennett Dam Boom & Anchor Installation
FRPD was contracted by BC Hydro to replace the existing debris boom system at the W.A.C. Bennett Dam and G.M. Shrum Generating Station on the Williston Reservoir, located 23 km from Hudson’s Hope, BC. The debris boom protects the spillway by intercepting and controlling floating debris before it reaches critical infrastructure.
Problem
The aging debris boom and buoy system required full replacement to maintain safe reservoir operations and ensure uninterrupted spillway performance. Work needed to be completed in a remote reservoir environment with challenging access conditions, variable water levels, and significant floating debris hazards. The installation required new in-reservoir anchors, new shore anchors, removal of the existing boom, and precise assembly of new boom spans and buoy elements.
Solution
FRPD delivered the complete debris boom replacement program, including anchor installation, boom assembly, buoy installation and removal of the existing system. Crews executed the work safely and efficiently within the remote operating environment, ensuring continued protection of BC Hydro’s spillway and power generation assets.

Key Facts
- Installed new in-reservoir anchors to support the debris boom alignment
- Installed new shore anchors for additional stability and load transfer
- Assembled and installed new boom spans and can buoys across the reservoir
- Removed the existing debris boom and its associated can buoys
- Constructed additional wooden debris-removal boom segments to enhance containment and debris management
FRPD’s work delivered a modern, reliable debris interception system that protects spillway operations and supports long-term safety and performance at the W.A.C. Bennett Dam and G.M. Shrum Generating Station.
