Squamish Terminals, a deep-water break-bulk terminal at the north end of Howe Sound, serves as a vital link between global shipping routes and North American markets. With two berths, three warehouses and full intermodal access, the terminal required significant infrastructure renewal to maintain safe and efficient cargo handling operations.

Problem

When Berth 1 was engulfed by a fire that destroyed the entire berth, quick work was required to replace it and get back to operating as quickly as possible. A replacement berth was designed to meet modern operational and safety standards. The project demanded a robust and durable design that could accommodate heavy cargo loads and withstand the marine environment.

Solution

FRPD, serving as general contractor, undertook the complete reconstruction of Berth 1. The work included soil densification within the wharf footprint, installation of 124 steel pipe piles, and supply and installation of 225 precast concrete components. FRPD also completed the cast-in-place deck structure and all supporting infrastructure, including tie-up dolphins, gangways and catwalks, delivering a long-lasting upgrade to this critical marine terminal.
