Ducks Unlimited Canada launched a restoration program at Sturgeon Banks to address significant marsh recession along the Fraser River estuary. FRPD was engaged to construct engineered sediment mounds designed to rebuild marsh elevation, restore habitat and improve long-term shoreline resilience.

Problem

The marsh at Sturgeon Banks had been steadily receding due to wave action, reduced sediment supply and changing estuarine conditions.
Restoring elevation and structure required precise sediment placement within a sensitive marsh habitat, with strict environmental controls and limited access for equipment.

Solution

FRPD constructed a series of engineered sediment mounds to rebuild marsh elevation and support the natural return of vegetation. Crews used low-impact marine equipment and controlled placement techniques to protect the surrounding habitat while achieving the restoration design.

Key Facts
  • Built engineered sediment mounds to restore marsh elevation
  • Worked within a sensitive marsh habitat under strict environmental oversight
  • Used controlled sediment placement to limit erosion and turbidity
  • Supported long-term marsh regeneration and shoreline stabilization
