FRPD was contracted to supply and install new marine foundations at Westshore Terminals Berth 2, including the full replacement of four dolphins and two spout tower foundations. The work required precise pile installation during limited annual shutdown periods to avoid operational impacts at Canada’s busiest coal export terminal.

Problem

Westshore Terminals needed upgraded marine structures to support the Potash Export Project.  This included adding new spout towers and dolphins to streamline operations at terminal. All construction activities had to be completed within tight seasonal shutdown windows — September to October 2023 and September to October 2024 — while maintaining strict safety protocols in an active industrial environment. Large-diameter piles required specialized marine equipment, coordinated scheduling and efficient mobilization to complete the work in the allotted time.

Solution

FRPD delivered the full marine and upland program for the new dolphins and spout tower foundations. Installation of large-diameter piles and precast concrete elements required specialized marine equipment, coordinated scheduling and efficient mobilization to complete the work in the allotted time. Seismic upgrade of the spout towers required a creative approach to working in confined areas on legacy infrastructure.

Key Facts
  • Installed four new marine dolphins supported by 16 driven piles, each 60″ diameter
  • Constructed two new spout tower foundations supported by six driven piles, each 60″ diameter
  • Completed all piling across two shutdown periods: September–October 2023 and September–October 2024
  • Executed piling with specialized large-diameter driving systems to meet strict tolerance and load requirements
  • Coordinated logistics, safety planning and marine equipment mobilization within an active export terminal

FRPD successfully delivered the new dolphin and tower foundation systems within each shutdown window, ensuring Westshore Terminals could maintain operations while upgrading critical marine infrastructure.
