In December 2022, FRPD mobilized to Trigon Terminals Berth 2 to complete berth dredging in advance of the B2BC Marine Structures construction program.
The work required rapid mobilization and precise planning to meet a strict regulatory deadline, with all in-water dredging required to be completed by February 15, 2023.

Problem

The project faced an extremely compressed schedule driven by environmental permitting restrictions. FRPD needed to mobilize immediately, develop an accelerated production plan, and mitigate risks associated with winter weather, limited daylight, vessel availability and crew capacity. Achieving the required dredge volume before the closure of the in-water work window was essential to keep the broader Trigon expansion program on schedule.

Solution

FRPD, working alongside the Coast Tsimshian Northern Contractor Alliance, delivered the complete berth dredging program ahead of schedule.Crews dredged and disposed of approximately 67,000 m³ of material in just two months—including work interruptions over the Christmas period. The team increased production by using larger-capacity barges, adding more barges to the cycle and operating nearly the entire project on double shifts.

Key Facts
  • Dredged and disposed of ~67,000 m³ of material within a two-month winter window
  • Used the FRPD 220 McKenzie pedestal-mounted spud derrick as the primary dredging plant
  • Employed five 2,500-ton barges to maximize cycle efficiency
  • Transported barges to PRPA’s RORO Ramp for offloading and trucking to designated disposal sites
  • Utilized extensive GPS positioning and bathymetric survey systems to ensure accuracy
  • Applied environmental-level cut buckets to maintain precision and minimize over-dredging
  • Enhanced operational knowledge of local wind patterns, swell conditions and site logistics at Trigon Terminals

FRPD completed the dredging safely and ahead of the regulatory deadline, enabling the start of the B2BC Marine Structures work and reinforcing the company’s capability to deliver high-production dredging under tight timelines and challenging winter conditions.
