Watchkeeping Mate (Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger)

Fraser River Pile & Dredge (GP) Inc. (FRPD) is Canada’s largest Marine & Infrastructure, Land Foundations and Dredging contractor. The company is privately owned with operations mainly in Western Canada and the Northwest Territories, and FRPD is a growing award-winning company.  This is a unionized position for our Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger FRPD 309.

We are seeking a Watchkeeping Mate with a demonstrated ability to manage assigned duties promptly and efficiently.


  • Remain on the Bridge and not leave until properly relieved
  • When the Watch is changed, the Officer being relieved shall remain on the bridge and be responsible for the vessel until the relieving Officer acknowledges that he/she has taken charge of the vessel

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Take charge of a navigation watch
  • Handle / manoeuvre / navigate the vessel
  • Supervise dredging operations and optimize production and the continuity of the vessel
  • Verify the vessel’s position
  • Enter all pertinent details into the Bridge Log as they occur
  • Check operation of all navigational aids – radar, depth sounder, GPS, radios
  • Monitor depth of water when approaching land or dredging
  • Maintain a good lookout for traffic or dangers
  • Give sufficient traffic warning to other vessels and check traffic conditions in confined and/or restricted areas
  • Be responsible for all elements of the dredging operation
  • Monitor the stability characteristics of the vessel during the dredging operation
  • Ensure day shapes and navigation lights are properly displayed as per the COLREGs
  • Perform any other duties that may be assigned from time to time

Required Qualifications:

  • Certificate of Competency
    • Preferred – Transport Canada Watchkeeping Mate
    • Minimum – Transport Canada Watchkeeping Mate, Near Coastal
  • Restricted Operator’s Certificate – Maritime Commercial (ROC-MC)
  • Marine Medical Certificate, Transport Canada
  • MED with respect to STCW basic safety
  • MED training with respect to proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats;
  • MED in advanced firefighting
  • Marine Advanced First Aid
  • Eligible to be added to Pacific Pilotage Authority Coastal Waiver from Compulsory Pilotage

Working Conditions:

  • Three-week rotation will typically be two weeks on and one week off
  • 12-hour days with overtime as required
  • Unionized position with the Canadian Merchant Service Guild
